![]() There are legendary tales about director Peter Jackson's penchant for detailing. ![]() But the end result was incredibly realistic. Casey, the tour guide, shattered some of my enchantment when he explained that it was achieved with a combination of sawdust, glue and food colour. What struck me was the incredible detailing, like moss and lichen on the weathered picket fences. Across the lake was a double arched bridge, adjacent to which was a mill and facing it was the Green Dragon Inn. Elsewhere, there were fruit orchards with pears and apples, vegetable patches and oversized pumpkins. The massive one at the centre was the party tree in the movies around which the Hobbits congregated. There were clusters of tall pine trees, their trunks gnarled and twisted into weird shapes. There were others perched at various heights, some set high above and overlooking the valley or the lake. I approached the nearest row of houses and found them fronted by lovely miniature gardens enclosed by mossy picket fences.
